Underestimated: Tank Support Kayle (Rework UPDATED)

By: Halipupu

Reworked Kayle

Reworked Kayle still works as a Support?

Rework nearly killed Kayle as a support, not due to heal nerf, but due to hellishly long cooldown on it.
This guide was made for old Kayle originally, but since I didn't intend on archiving my build just yet I added another one for the reworked (=insanely nerfed) Kayle.
Kayle still works as a support, but you won't be able to spam heal. Her heal is more like Sona's heal except with double the amount of cooldown and a speed buff.

Differences between old and new Kayle:

Passive is the most important change to Kayle, from hybrid AP/AD passive, we got a new one that reduces enemies armor and magic resist by 2% every hit whereas it can stack up to 5 times, reducing about 10% of their resistances. Not a good one, as you can see, even  Starcall is better.
Cooldown on her heal was raised from 10 -> 15 seconds as well as the speed buff duration got nerfed hard. Alltogether this skill was ruined, AP ratio went down with the heal power, BUT this skill can still be used to heal even though mainly for a speed buff. Kayle can still support with this skill.

I'm not gonna explain about  Righteous Fury and  Reckoning because they didn't change much except for the fact that now  Reckoning can be used to do burst damage with 1.0AP ratio. Ulti remains unchanged.

Introduction

Kayle is and will be most of the underrated characters. She used to be able to pretty much anything you wanted: hybrid DPS, full AP and a full support. Rework concentrated on making her more of a AS/AP carry with some AD capabilities as well. Even though she has long cooldown on her main supportive skill  Divine Blessing she's still able to support with some hanges to the playstyle.

Main focus of the build one is to be full-support.
Second build concentrates on being support early, DPS late game.

Why this build?

Kayle has second highest base HP in the game, so why not actually use it to your profit? She also has a heal and a very good ulti, therefore she's very capable of saving lives. That's why I like tanky-support build. Core build is affordable due to gold per 5 items and very often you can see Kayle's with almost zero damage even if they seem to have a nice damage based build.

First build is simply for supporting purposes: you will not be able to do damage, but does that really matter if you can keep your team alive long enough for them to finish your enemies?

Second build is an early game support, late game DPS build. Even though Kayle now has long cooldown on her nerfed heal, with some CDR it's still very useful. Even Janna has a long cooldown on her shield, but she's still a nice support, so Kayle can be too.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+long survivability
+high defenses
+high cooldown reduction for spammable skills
+slow & speed buff
+cheap core item build

Cons

-ridiculously low damage
-no AP early game for better heal
-really bad farming
-prejudices of other players
-bad attitude towards Kayle

Runes

Marks:
 Greater Mark of Insight
All of Kayle's offensive abilities deal magic damage, including  Righteous Fury so it's kind of a self explanatory.
Greater Mark of Desolation Armor penetration works well on DPS Kayle if you max our  Righteous Fury first. Otherwise not too good.
Greater Mark of Alacrity These are for the reworked Kayle to make most use of her new passive.

Seals:
Greater Seal of Replenishment Kayle is mana hungry: these are for early game problems.
Greater Seal of Clarity These are for late game mana pool.

Glyphs:
Greater Glyph of Warding For support/tank Kayle, extra magic resist is never bad.
Greater Glyph of Force Higher AP for some damage.
Greater Glyph of Focus Cooldown reduction works for all support characters, especially healers.

Quintessences:
Greater Quintessence of Fortitude Kayle has quite high HP naturally and some extra HP early game makes her pretty much unkillable if you went for defensive masteries.
Greater Quintessence of Force 15 AP early game boosts her attack damage, as well as giving obvious buff to her heal.
Greater Quintessence of Insight Extra magic penetration for extra damage.
Greater Quintessence of Desolation These are for the reworked Kayle. Can be mixed with the mag pen marks.

Masteries

Here are some mastery choices for Kayle no matter how you build her.

Tank/support Kayle: 0-21-9
Simply for more defense and longer survivability and the remaining points I used for better regeneration. The longer you survive the longer your team survives. You will not have extra cooldown reduction or damage buffs however.

Support Kayle:0-9-21
Put points into either  Ghost+ Clairvoyance or  Flash+ Clairvoyance masteries. Rest remaining 9 points into defense masteries will guarantee nice support to the team.

DPS/AP Kayle: 9-0-21

Basic for a support and a caster.

Not recommended: 9-21-0
Why not? Not enough regen to be able to manage it well enough to take advantage of these masteries.

Summoner Spells

For supporting purposes, since this is a support build. I know my masteries won't give increased duration or shorter cooldown, but it's stilla good spell to have.
Good for escaping and chasing with Kayle's own speed buff.
Can be taken instead of Ghost, but will have a longer cooldown.
Can be taken instead of CV when in normal games. Good to be where your team needs you as fast as possible. Although that shouldn't be a problem with your own speed buff.
You can take a lot of punishment with the tanky-support build, but nothing will save you from never ending stun+slow+snare chain, therefore a good choice.
Good choice if you play normal, can be taken in place of CV.

No matter what are your preferances for summoner spells, always have at least one escape skill!

Skill Sequence

Tanky/support Kayle:

Righteous Fury for ranged attacks simply.
Divine Blessing maxed out first for maximum heal and support to the team.
Reckoning should be maxed out right after heal to improve your damage output.

Hybrid DPS Kayle:

Righteous Fury is your main priority, therefore max it first for splash damage. Good farming skill and nice damage.
Divine Blessing is second focus skill, Kayle is still a support.
Reckoning Mainly for slow, therefore last upgrade.

AP Kayle:

Righteous Fury for farming and damage purposes.
Divine Blessing simply for speed boost, but max it out last.
Reckoning for the damage, thefore max out first. Has a good AP ratio for a burst damage.

Use of ultimate:

Intervention will grant short immunity to the one you cast in on. Mainly you should use it to save the ally with least hp and sometimes to prolong the damage your teammates are able to do by casting it early, with some exceptions:
-Don't use it on your tank, because if he dies it's better than your carries getting killed
-Don't use it on yourself either unless you're the last one alive
-Stay close to your carry in case they get focused and will need this.
-Sometimess it's a good thing to use ulti on the teammate that has by accident positioned themselves in the middle of your enemies, to allow him/her to run to safer position
INTERVENTION IS NOT EQUILEVANT TO ZILEAN'S ULTI.

Sometimes teammates seem to play a bit reckless when you pick a Kayle, because of your ulti, but you must let them know that they should play like they usually do. They're not reckless with Soraka either, so why they should be with you?

Item Build & Optional Choices

Starter Items:

 or

Both ways are fine: get  Doran's Ring for even more HP early game and a bit of AP, or get  Faerie Charm and a Ward and Health Potions, for early game supporting and an earlier Philosopher's Stone.

Core:

I choose gold/5s mainly through early game, because your farming skills will be quite terrible. Also these items will pay pack the coins you invested by the time you can upgrade them into  Shurelya's Reverie and  Randuin's Omen which are both quite nice items.

Note: Gold/5 items are UNIQUE to itself, therefore getting more than one of the same kind isn't any good.  Heart of Goldand  Philosopher's Stone will still stack together.

Shoe alternatives:

Mostly with this build I'd pick  Mercury's Treads for some Tenacity and more magic resist to be more durable, but if you don't need to worry about those and wanna get some damage instead of  Spirit Visage/ Soul Shroud then CDR boots are cool.
Berserker's Greaves are mainly for the reworked Kayle DPS, not a support one.

Mid Game:

Tanky Support Build:
 or
Reworked Support Kayle:

Tanky Support Build:
I changed the item order slightly to give chance for gold/10 items to stack for longer. There was this debate on the usefulness of Rod of Ages on Kayle, therefore after some pondering I thought it would suite perfectly well for a tanky support. You cn build  Catalyst the Protector into  Rod of Ages for some AP and HP, and if you're getting beaten by mages, it can be built into  Banshee's Veil for some extra magic resist.
Build up your  Kindlegem and  Philosopher's Stone into [Shurelya's Reverie]] for cooldown reduction.

Reworked Support Kayle:

New Kayle is more of a attack speed based character due to her new passive and longer cooldowns on skills, therefore Malady is a great choice to stack with her passive.  Nashor's Tooth is simply to get max cooldown reduction as fast as possible to be able to support efficiently even with the rework trying to make it harder. Both items give attack speed as well as AP to boost your late game damage with  Reckoning as well as slightly make your heal better.

Late Game:

Tanky Support Build:
  or  or
Reworked Support Kayle:

Tanky Support Build:
Earlier I recommended getting an early  Randuin's Omen, but now I decided it's better for  Heart of Gold to give more coins for a longer time. After getting Randuin's, choose which one to get:  Soul Shroud for balanced teams or  Spirit Visage for teams with how magic resist.
You can get  Nashor's Tooth with this build too to be taken instead of either of the CDR items mentioned earlier. It should work better with the rework.

Reworked Support Kayle:
Late game finish up your  Shurelya's Reverie for maxed out cooldown, HP and nice regen as well as for a second speed buff in addition to your own.
After getting the "support-items" get yourself a  Wit's End to boost your passive even further as well as getting a better magic resist.

Last Item choices:

As a last item you can either hellish amount of AP from  Rabadon's Deathcap to get a burst damage on your Reckoning, or take more magic resist from  Abyssal Scepter which is a useful item on your teammates that use magic. If you want to take attack damage, with that amount of HP  Atma's Impaler will be a great choice.
Trinity Force works again with the new Kayle and  Stark's Fervor is useful to the team that has many DPS characters. I'll see if I put item in the build itself somewhere earlier.
Usually if you ever make it this far, the last item spot can be for wards and stuff.
Also no matter what time of the game, if you need it, pick  Oracle's Elixir.

Ranked Play

Let's face it: Nobody uses Kayle in Ranked Games and if you actually pick her, someone threatens to go AFK in character selection. (I don't see why, they'll lose ELO simply because of their shitty attitude).

I don't see why Kayle offtank-support wouldn't work perfectly well in Ranked games. Defensive masteries own and gold/5 items are basic for a support and who wouldn't love a non-feeding support? Seriously, Kayle's ultimate can really save their butts not to talk about heal+speed boost. Also no kill steals with this build, that's pretty damn sure.

This game score was send by Janhus, currently 2000 elo at EU server. This was a Ranked Victory at 1800+ games.

So, Kayle for Ranked Games!

Tips

-Don't lane with another melee preferably: you'll get raped
-Early game your mana regen is nonexistent, therefore use it mainly for heal and slow if you're ganking someone
-Roaming can be a good choice if your lane partner is doing well alone
-Build up  Philosopher's Stone and  Heart of Gold as fast as possible for more coins, because you shouldn't be farming too much - delay upgrading them for long enough
-Mid to late game you should be quite sturdy, therefore allowing you to distract your enemies whereas your teammates can kill them in teamfights
-Late game be a shadow to your carry, go ward dragon and Baron, CV bushes, buy an oracle with spare money and go to destroy their wards
-Use your tankish nature to your advantage and position yourself between your carries and the enemies to take most of the damage yourself while your carries kill them
-Stay close enough to allies to heal them when needed
-Since Kayle's heal has a speed buff and you have a  Ghost, you should be quite an escape artist even if you're left alive last
-Use slow from  Randuin's Omen in addition to your own, for chase
-Use speed buff from  Shurelya's Reverie in addition to your own speed buff, for chase and escape
-Don't ulti yourself unless you're the last one alive: you should survive quite a bit of punishment
-Tank turrets, not enemies 1v5.

Game Scores and Stats

Here are scores and stats from a couple of games with this build.

These game scores were sent by PandaTime.

These games were played by Janhus, 1900-2000~ elo player at EU server, using this build.

These are my games with stats:

This game I actually got lucky and they kept on focusing me so my teammates could kill them. It was a short but a memorable game with me running away from 4 guys for half of the map. Eventually I did die, since I got out of mana and Katarina flash-killed me.

This is a more recent game where the game actually bugged and I had to play with my Sona runes and masteries. (9-0-21 masteries, AP/lvl glyphs, flat AP quints, mag pen marks, flat mana regen seals)
I had a bad early game and we were losing, but after 55 minutes of tough fight we won :)

As you can see from the stats:
-no damage that can be taken seriously
-instead you can take some serious punishment
-you will be able to heal a lot more than your average-Kayle
-poor farming has poor results, but even the base build works fine

Summary

Kayle is a very underrated and underestimated champion even though there are many different ways to play her, suited for multiple situations. People dislike her because they've never either seen a good Kayle or can't play her themselves.

I created this build to demonstrate there is a completely different way to play Kayle, other than all those hybrid Kayles with recommended items who pretend to be original. It's ok to play her like that, obviously how she was meant to be played. This build is to offer an alternative for those who are sick and tired of seeing Kayle as a shitty champion. She can be so much better than her label gives her credit for. (Even with the recent rework which is just a giant nerf.)

After the rework I had to try an alternative way of playing support Kayle to suit her passive slightly better than the old one which still works.
Support Kayle isn't dead yet, Riot just made it harder for us.

Thank you for reading and voting on my guide: please let me know if I have missed something or be free to just critisize my choices. Opinions on my guide are very much appreciated as I will keep on updating the guide.
